Supernova SN 2025pht   
and its progenitor
 in NGC 1637

 

This was the brightest supernova of 2025, when discovered.

It has since been surpassed by SN 2025rbs.

 

The supernova was discovered by ASAS-SN on 29 June 2025, and classified as a Type II-P supernova on 3 July 2025.

NGC 1637 was also the home of the brightest supernova of 1999, SN 1999em.

 

The candidate progenitor of SN 2025pht can be found in the Hubble Picture of the week posted on 2 December 2024.

Note:  In this image, north is 21.9° right of vertical. It has been rotated 90° clockwise from the original image.

The presumed progenitor has been cataloged in the Hubble Source Catalog for NGC 1637 as

MatchID 1150202 with coordinates RA 04:41:28.838 DEC -02:51:56.01
